Floods death toll hits 481

The death toll from flood-related incidents caused due to drowning, waterborne diseases and snakebites shot up to 481 with 38 fresh deaths reported in the last 24 hours until Wednesday morning, reports UNB.
Of the victims, 15 died of diarrhoea, nine from respiratory problems, 30 from snakebites and 427 from drowning, said officials at the Health Department.
They said the waterborne disease has so far affected some 58,440 people across the country.
According to a statistics provided by Food and Disaster Management Ministry, a total of 251 upazilas in 39 districts were hit by flooding, affecting over 1,04,68,833 people of 22,40,287 families until at 9:30am.
The flooding also damaged some 59,501 houses (completely), 8,62,657 houses (partially), crops on 6,79,615 acres of land (completely) and on 6,78,1388 acres (partially), 2,561 kilometres roads (completely), 21,785 kms roads (partially), 510 educational institutions (completely) and 6,517 educational institutions (partially) in the affected areas.
It also damaged 79 kms of embankments (completely), 716 embankments (partially), 72 bridges and culverts (completely) and 1,536 bridges and culverts (partially).
Some 2,25,880 people took shelter in 904 shelter centres opened for them.
Meanwhile, a total of Tk 117 million (11.70 crore) has been allocated for the flood victims of Sirajganj, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Manikganj, Jamalpur, Bogra, Tangail, Faridpur, Rajbari, Shariatpur, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Magura, Munshiganj and Jhenidah districts from the Chief Adviser's Relief Fund.
