SHERPUR: Onrush of water from hills, triggered by heavy rainfall, has submerged low-lying areas of bordering Nalitabari and Jhenaigati upazila causing damage to just-planted Aman seedlings on hundreds acres of lands, according to a news agency.
Besides, croplands in the vicinities of Bhogai, Chellakhali, Someshwari and Moharashi rivers have gone under sheets of sand carried by the water rolling down from hills.
Locals said heavy rainfall for the last two days and gushing waters from hills caused Bhogai and Chellkhali rivers to swell leading to inundation of Aman seedlings on hundreds of acres of land in Nalitabari.
Nalitabari upazila agriculture officer Sharif Iqbal said five hectares of croplands on the banks of Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers have gone under sand layers, leaving those uncultivable.
In Jhenaighati upazila, the flood situation worsened due to the incessant rainfall, leaving hundreds of people marooned. Hundreds of acres of Aman fields and its seedbeds have already gone under flood waters.
