Floods worsen in several dists

The flood situation in several districts continued to worsen on Tuesday and Wednesday due to incessant rainfall over the last three days as well as onrush of water from the upstream.
In Kurigram, thousands of people have been marooned for the least 9-10 days as the water level in major rivers like the Brahmaputra, Teesta and Dharla have been flowing above or close to their danger levels due to the incessant rains. According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials, the Dharla was flowing 20cm above the danger mark while the Teesta and Brahmaputra were flowing close to the red mark on Wednesday. Officials at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said Aman crops on some 56,000 hectares of land have been inundated, posing a great threat to the rice output of the district. In Moulvibazar, flashflood caused by onrush of water from Tripura state of India has led to the swelling of Juri River and its branches, inundating about 15 villages in Juri upazila of the district. About 10,000 people in those villages have been marooned by the floodwater while the water level continued to rise, according to reports reaching in Dhaka till Wednesday morning.
In Sunamganj, the Surma River was flowing 58cm above the danger level while about 135mm and 275mm rainfall had been recorded at Sunamganj and Jadukata points respectively on Saturday and Sunday. The incessant rainfall since Sunday has flooded low-lying areas in Doarabazar, Bishambharpur, Tahirpur, Jagannathpur and Sunamganj Sadar upazilas. About 10,000 hectares of paddy fields have already been inundated, according to the DAE.
In Bhola, the Tetulia River was flowing above the danger level at several points, inundating some 40 villages.
In Sylhet, most of the low-lying areas of the north-eastern city have gone under water while the road network across the district has collapsed due to flooding in Jaintapur and Goainghat upazilas, according to a news agency.
