Floodwaters start receding from low areas in Goalunda

RAJBARI, Aug 23 (BSS: Floodwaters have started receding from different low-lying areas in Goalunda and Rajbari Sadar upazilas of the district.
Meanwhile erosion by the river Padma has taken a serious turn in char areas of the district.
The worst affected areas are: Char Jowkura, Char Silimpur and Char Kathuria in Rajbari Sadar Upazila and Daulatdia and Char Kashinathpur in Goalunda and Sengram, Bahadurpur and Habaspur in Pangsha.
Over 500 families of different villages in two upazilas have been rendered homeless while a huge area of croplands have been eroded by the river Padma during the flood.
The erosion-hit families have taken shelter on high lands and the embankment nearby. They are passing their days in hardship.
District flood control room and relief and rehabilitation office sources said flood waters have damaged standing crops of over 38,166 hectares of land completely and 39,861 hectares of land partially.
A total of 2,551 dwelling houses have been damaged completely while 20,997 partially by the flood.
