Flower business boom in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Sept 29: The flower vendors are doing brisk business as the item is gaining popularity as a commercial commodity in Rangpur City. Once it had only limited uses. Nowadays flower has become an important commercial product as its use in marriage ceremony an other socio-cultural functions has increased gradually.
For this reason a large number of flower markets have sprung in different parts of the city and the business of the same is gaining ground.
Sources said, most of the flowers of our country are of the species of India, Panama, China, Japan and Africa. Some farmers started flower cultivation as commercial basis due to increasing demands.
As a result many flower farms have been set up in Rangpur district.
Garlands, flower baskets etc. are called cut-flowers. The business of cut flowers started by selling to the buyers and devotees of holy places.
Commercially used flowers are rose, tuberose, different species of orchid, gladiola etc. Besides chinabox, jasmine, water lily, marigold etc are also grown.
The flower vendors said most of the flowers are produced in the country except some kinds of marigold which are imported at times from neighbouring countries.
At present more than sixty flower shops are in Rangpur city and a huge quantity of flowers is being sold in these shops everyday.
The vendors said different types of roses are being sold at Tk. 4 to 8 per piece, tube rose at Tk. 4 to 10 per stick and gladiola at Tk. 4 to 8. Different kinds of marigold garland and baskets at Tk. 80 to 300.
The vendors said the demand of flowers is increasing day by day and more people are getting interested in flower business.
