Flower farming increasing in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Apr 29: With the increase in demand of flowers, along with the flower shops, cultivation of varieties of flower has increased in the district.
One Shafiqul Islam of Saidpur upazila has been cultivating flower for years. In this year he cultivated flower in one acre of land in Niamatpur union council of the upazila. He has cultivated tube roses, marigold and gladiolus.
While contacted he said he tested soil from Dinajpur and collected seed and saplings from Jashore district which he planted in his flower farmland. He said he has a flower shop in Saidpur municipality. He used to purchase and transport flower from Jashore and now he does not need to do so.
Inspired by the success story of Shafiqul Islam many other flower cultivation Projects are now spreading across the district and some other adjacent areas of Dinajpur.
Shamsul Islam, lecturer of Chanderhat College under Sadar upazila, said he cultivated marigold on one acre of land last year.
Sources said flowers are now being cultivated in Boragari union of Domar upazila, Balagram union of Jaldhaka upazila, Kalikapur union of Kishoreganj upazila and Khogsabari union of Sadar upazila.
Now flower shops are to be found in all the six upazila headquarters. There are as many as seven flower shops in Nilphamari municipality, all of them collect flower from Jashore district.
Sources said purchasing flower from other districts may come to an end very soon as flower cultivation is increasing in the district very rapidly.
