Fog stops Mawa-Kewrakandi ferry operation

Friday, 31 January 2014

Ferry movement on the Mawa-Kawrakandi river route remained halted till Friday morning because of dense fog. Chandra Sheikhar Ray, assistant manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Mawa office in Munshiganj has said that they kept suspended ferry service and plying of the water vessels from about 12:00 am due to blurred visibility caused by dense fog. Four ferries with 500 passengers and several hundred vehicles on board were forced to anchor at the middle point of the Padma River to avoid accident, he said. Around 400 goods-laden vehicles, private cars and passenger buses had to remain in wait at both ferry ghats (terminal) in Mawa and Kewarakandi for the halt to ferry operation. The suspension of the ferry service caused huge traffic jam on the both sides of the river ghats, causing immense suffering to the passengers. Ferry operation on the route was yet to resume as of filing this report after 10:00 am, according to UNB.
