Food inflation eases in July

The rate of food inflation in the first month (July) of the new fiscal 2015-16 eased slightly, although general and non-food inflation witnessed a rising trend. The food inflation came down to 6.07 per cent which was 6.32 per cent in June, the last month of the previous fiscal, according to the latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). Besides, the general inflation registered 6.36 per cent in July which was 6.25 per cent in June. The rate of non-food inflation showed a rising trend. The non-food inflation increased to 6.80 per cent in July, 2015 which was 6.15 per cent in the preceding June. "More consumption of non-food items during the Eid-ul-fitr has pushed the inflation slightly up in July," Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal told reporters while releasing the monthly consumer price index at the post ECNEC press briefing at NEC-II conference room in city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar today. "People from all walks of life were engaged in heavy buying of clothes and other items during the Eid which put an impact on the market," he noted, according to a news agency.
