Food is the best medicine: Motia

Monday, 18 April 2011

Agriculture Minister Motia Chowdhury has called food as the 'best medicine', insisting that her government over the time has ensured minimum food for all in the country and saved millions of lives from hunger. The agriculture minister said this, while inaugurating the Public Health and Informatics Department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the city recently, reports BSS. The department, first of its kind in BSMMU, is financed by the US charity, Rockefeller Foundation. This is also the first BSMMU initiative to offer higher education on public health and preventive aspects for disease control. President of Rockefeller Foundation Dr Judith Rodin, BSMMU Vice-chancellor Prof Pran Gopal Datta and Rockefeller Foundation's associate director Dr Mushtaque R Chowdhury were present, among others, on the occasion. "The per capita food availability has increased significantly and we have been able to triple the food production over decades," the minister said.
