CHITTAGONG, Mar 1: City Mayor M Manjur Alam today asked household owners in the city to cultivate every inch of unutilised land for growing fruits and vegetables to meet the growing demand of food. He said this while inaugurating the City Food Production Day, first ever in the city, at the Muslim Institute ground Tuesday. The project funded by Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has been undertaken as part of poverty alleviation in cooperation with UNDP and the International Development Department (IDD) of the UK Government. Day-long programme of the City Food Production Day included rally, discussion meeting, screening of documentary films on agri-production, agriculture fair, cultural function etc. Chaired by City Corporation penal mayor Abul Hossain, the inaugural function was also addressed by Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University VC Dr Mahfuzul Bari and senior agriculture development officer Md Shahnewaz as special guests. City Mayor said that paddy, vegetables, dairy and poultry farms could be developed in the vacant spaces around the houses and the CCC will distribute papaya saplings free of cost for the house owners. "Best producers will also be awarded special prizes," he said.
