SYLHET, Jan 11: The steel structure foot overbridge set in Sylhet city's Modhuban point area gave no benefit as the pedestrians got no interest using it. Rather, after its setting, the traffic police had to withdraw their post on the point while a number of fruit vendors took their possession on the centre point of the bridge's pillar, causing further congestion.
On the plea of easing traffic congestion in the city's busy area, the foot bridge was set in July-August of 2015 while the finance minister AMA Muhith, also the lawmaker of Sylhet-1 constituency inaugurated formally on September 03. Setting the bridge at a busy and congested area was strongly opposed by the city dwellers as well as the traders of the city, but to no effect.
Ignoring the city dwellers' protests, the SCC set it at a cost of Tk 16.6 million, while the overbridge was considered just wastage of money having no use at all by common men. Newspapers, both local and national ones also carried stories in this regard.
The steel structure gave no benefit for the pedestrians during the two and half years, rather it has caused much trouble for them, a number of people including trader like Aminul Haque of the city's Ambarkhana area alleged yesterday.
However, the SCC took decision to withdraw it for resetting at the Humayun Rashid Chowdhury Square in Dakshin Surma area months ago. But it is yet to be done for unknown reasons.
