Tuesday, 8 September 2009

The new football season kicks-off with the reigning champions Dhaka Mohammedan face newcomers Feni Soccer Club in the inaugural match of the Citycell Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium Thursday, reports BSS.
The football authority of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Football Federation arranged a draw of the curtain raiser tournament to the football season yesterday evening at a local hotel.
The organizer of Citycell Federation Cup BFF might consider themselves lucky as the draw turned out in favour of the BFF as popular outfits defending champions Dhaka Mohammedan and runners-up Dhaka Abahani were placed in Group A and Group D respectively which means the two powerhouses will not meet before the final if everything goes right for them.
Dhaka Mohammedan, Sheikh Russell and Dhaka Abahani are clear favourites of their respective groups A, B and D. Only Group B looks to be open as Chittagong Mohammedan Sporting Club, Arambagh Krira Sangha, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society and Shuktara Jubo Sangha of Narayanganj appear to have the equal strength all of them have equal chance of making the next round.
The top two teams from each group will move into the quarter-finals scheduled to take place after the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The tournament will have an eight-day break from September 18 to 25 and there will also be no matches on September 28 for Durga Puja.
The quarter-finals will be held on October 1 and 2, the semi-finals on October 4 and 5 and the final on October 8. The matches will be played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium and at the Army Stadium.
