The new football season kicks off with reigning champions Dhaka Mohammedan taking on babes Feni Soccer Club in the inaugural match of the Citycell Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city today (Thursday), reports BSS.
The match starts at 4 pm with BFF Vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedy inaugurating the meet at a simple ceremony.
In the day's second fixture, Brothers Union face newcomer Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP).
Dhaka Mohammedans are hot favourites for tomorrow's tie as newcomer Feni Soccer Club face a daunting task against a formidable opponent who not only have local star players but also have two foreign booters.
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), the organisers of Citycell Federation Cup, is considering themselves lucky as the draw turned out in favour of the BFF as popular outfits defending champions Dhaka Mohammedans and runners- up Dhaka Abahani were placed in Group A and Group D respectively which means the two powerhouses will not meet before the final if everything goes right for them.
The top two teams from each group will move into the quarterfinals scheduled to take place after Eid-ul-Fitr.
The tournament will have an eight-day break from September 18 and there will also be no matches on September 28 for Durga Puja.
The quarterfinals will be held on October 1 and 2, the semifinals on October 4 and 5 and the final on October 8. The matches will be played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium and at the Army Stadium.
The champions will earn a cash prize of Taka 5 lakh along with a glittering trophy while the runners-up will be richer by Taka 3 lakh and a trophy.
