For an effective and clearly focused ACC

Friday, 4 December 2009

It is in the overriding national interest that the Anticorruption Commission (ACC) must not become a toothless tiger. It must have adequate powers to start cases on its own against bigwigs and should not take clearance from the supreme power centre of the government for the same. Nothing is yet heard about these operational aspects of the ACC. Besides, it should have adequate capacity and competence to discharge its functional responsibility.
Meanwhile, the ACC must not overdo things. It must not be overburdened with work-load for dealing with all sorts of irregularities and malpractices, many of which are systemic in nature in the given societal context in Bangladesh. It should only deal with cases of corruption involving gross abuse of public positions or power for amassing private fortune. For that matter, corruption must be properly defined and understood. Furthermore, the ACC must not serve any particular purpose, suiting the political interest of the powers-that-be.
