For better railway between Lalmonirhat and Burimari
Monday, 10 August 2009
ONCE, the railway, established by the British, was the only means of communication between Lalmonirhat and Burimari land port. Now, goods and machinery are imported and exported through the Burimari land port. Many people in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh use the Burimari land port everyday for visits for education, tourism and medical treatment. But the old railway tracks between Lalmonirhat town and Burimari land port are no more in good shape. Only two local trains of Bangladesh Railways run up-down everyday using the tracks in a miserable state. Trains either make accidents or are derailed quite frequently. Many people in import-export businesses do, therefore, hesitate to depend on the railway. They prefer the road transport, though it costs them more than the Railway. Bangladesh Railway loses a large amount of revenues every year. However, despite the limitation, Lalmonirhat-Burimari section of the Bangladesh Railway earned a handsome operating profit in fiscal 2008-09.
Bangladesh Railway can multiply its profits by modernising its Lalmonirhat-Burimari tracks and pressing inter-city trains in the sector. Better communication would encourage tourists to visit tourist spots like Teesta Barrage, Tin Bigha Corridor and Burimari land port.
I would earnestly request the Prime Minister and the Communications Minister to pay attention to the matter.
