Foreign office-level Indo-Bangla consultations begin today

Monday, 25 June 2007

After a gap of over two years, India and Bangladesh will start foreign office-level consultations today (Monday) to discuss entire range of bilateral issues, including trade, transportation, border demarcation and security concerns, reports UNB.
A four-member Indian delegation, led by Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon, arrived in the city Sunday afternoon for the talks.
In his arrival statement at Zia International Airport, the Indian foreign secretary said, "I am delighted to be in Dhaka for our bilateral Foreign Office Consultations (FOCs) on June 25-26."
He said the purpose of his visit is to hold substantive discussions on the bilateral issues between the two countries and to see how to take the relations forward, to the mutual benefit.
Menon said that he would be holding talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart, acting foreign secretary Touhid Hossain. "During the FOCs we intend to explore how we can further strengthen our bilateral cooperation, and also to discuss other matters of mutual interest."
Earlier, a foreign ministry official release said the two sides would have "wide-ranging discussions on all aspects of India-Bangladesh bilateral relations" during the four-day visit of the Indian delegation.
"The government is of the view that the visit of the Indian foreign secretary will be yet another important opportunity to carry on the process of constructive and forward-looking engagement between the two countries," the release said.
