Foreign ships threaten to boycott Mongla port

KHULNA, Mar 13: A letter was sent to the Mongla Port chairman on March 9 by an agent of a foreign ship calling for dredging the river in front of the port jetties to keep its navigability, sources said.
The captain of a foreign ship expressed dissatisfaction at the inconvenience in anchoring his ship at the port jetty due to poor navigability of the river. The foreign ship operators also warned of stopping the use of the port if this problem was not solved on an emergency basis.
The captains of local and foreign ships are unwilling to anchor their ships at the port jetties due to poor navigability of the river Posur.
Local shipping agents are also trying to solve the problem in different meetings with the port authority.
When contacted, Member (Operation) of Mongla Port Authority (MPA) Md. Lutfar Rahman told this correspondent that tenders were invited three times earlier but no response was received till now. At last on March 10 the MPA board decided to invite tender again on an emergency basis.
