Foreign vessel catches fire in Ctg port

CHITTAGONG, June 4 (UNB): A foreign cargo ship caught fire in Chittagong port Monday morning leaving two of its crew critically injured and burning down papers, pulses and other valuables.

Fire brigade sources said the blaze originated in the captain's room of the Chinese flag carrying G Ong Sin cargo ship at about 6:55 am from an electric short circuit and soon engulfed the adjacent machine room and two other rooms.

Huge quantum of papers, pulses and other goods, kept in the ship, were gutted and some other cargo were also partially damaged.

Chief Cook of the ship Qui Pian Kong and another crew sustained critical burn injuries in the fire. They were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital Burn Unit.

Later, six fire fighting units from Agrabad Fire Station and Chittagong port and a navy ship rushed to the spot and put out the blaze at about 8:45 am after two hours of frantic efforts.

The extent of loss from the fire could not be ascertained immediately.
