Former BNP MP Lalu, 2 others jailed in Bogra

BOGRA, Sept 03: Former BNP MP Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu was awarded two years' rigorous imprisonment by a special court here Monday for misappropriation of relief materials. The Speedy Trial Tribunal also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer three months more in jail. The same court today sentenced Bogra district BNP general secretary Saiful Islam and another BNP leader Shokrana to one year in jail in another case of relief embezzlement. It also fined them Tk 5,000 each. They will have to suffer three months more in jail if they fail to pay the penalty. Joint forces arrested Lalu from his Sutrapur residence in the town on February 13 and seized various relief materials, including warm clothes, saris, lungis and three-pieces. The convicts were in the dock when Judge SM Ferdous handed down the verdict. —UNB
