Former British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury Tuesday categorically denied UK's involvement in the 1/11 political changeover in Bangla-desh saying that the political situation was responsible for that, reports UNB.
"It's simply not true, it's not true," he said in an interview with private TV channels at the British High Commissioner's residence.
Choudhury, now Director of the International Institutions at UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), came here Monday on a 3-day official visit amidst allegations that he had a role in the 1/11 episode that put the country under two years of emergency rule.
"We worked very hard to support everywhere we can… We supported the roadmap towards the election and we supported the voter list," he said, adding that this accusation is unfortunate.
Choudhury who had been here as High Commissioner from 2004 to 2008 said the political situation at that time led to the creation of the 1/11 event in this country.
A Bangladeshi-born Briton, Choudhury said, 'We're good friend of this country."
Opposition BNP protested his arrival in Bangladesh as they alleged that he was one of the main patrons for the 1/11 political changeover. Choudhury had a meeting with heads of 11 UN agencies Tuesday discussing the ways of a coordinated and effective cooperation in Bangladesh.
