CHITTAGONG, Jul 19: Former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has suggested taking up different income generating projects to raise fund in stead of depending on the government for allocation of fund for development of Chittagong city.
"If Chittagong lags behind in respect development it will drag the country backward as well. That is why I had a plan to build up the port city as the country's best city. But I could not see it completed," he said while addressing a meeting organized on completion of two years of city mayor M Manjur Alam in office on Wednesday.
City Mayor Manjur Alam invited the former mayor to attend the get-together of elite of the city held at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh Chittagong Centre.
Chief Executive Officer of Chittagong City Corporation Anwara Begum delivered the address of welcome while Professor Sikandar Khan, vice chancellor of East Delta University, also spoke among others on the occasion.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury said, "I took a separate project titled City Government. For many reasons I could not implement it. Had the project been completed Chittagong would have been the best city in the country."
Chowdhury, also president of the ruling Awami League Chittagong city unit, advised the incumbent mayor to go ahead with the income generating projects and not to wait on the government for financial support. "You are an elected mayor. You must fight to stand beside the public who will help you proceed towards your goal," he advised.
Mayor Manjur Alam said that he had been working relentlessly to build up a prosperous city since he took office of the mayor of CCC on July 20, 2010.
"I have been trying to do all works in line with the government policies rising above all political affiliations from the very first day," he said.
The mayor said that Chittagong City Corporation is not getting adequate fund for the city development. The CCC has been given only Tk 9.15 billion since 1990 which is not sufficient for such an important city, he said.
"The CCC is providing service to the country's prime maritime port because the port is like our mother. But the port in turn pays us Tk 530 million annually, which is also an irregular feature. Tk 3.50 billion of the CCC is still lying outstanding with them and this has put us in financial problems in carrying out the water logging and other development projects," Manjur Alam lamented.
