Former OC sent to jail over custodial torture in Sylhet

Former officer-in-charge (OC) of Sylhet Kotwali thana Ataur Rahman, charged with torturing an accused in police custody, has surrendered before the court and sought bail, reports bdnews24.com.
Sylhet Magistrate's court Judge Shahedul Karim rejected his bail plea and sent him to jail, his lawyer Ishtiaq Ahmed Chowdhury said.
On Aug 3, 2014, one Shamim Ahmed Chowdhury filed a case against Ataur Rahman, accusing him of torturing his brother Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury in police custody.
The then OC along with Inspector Shamol Banik and five other police officials were charged over the case.
The charge sheet stated that on July 17, 2014 Kamal locked into an altercation with the police over parking a car in Sylhet town's Noyasarak area.
Following the tiff, police took Kamal to the police station and tortured him in the cell.
After the charge sheet was filed, on July 27 OC Ataur, Inspector Shamol Banik, SI Ashraful Islam, ASI Abu Taher, Constable Adhir Chandra, Rajib Kanti Das, Azadur Rahman, and Nazmul Hossain were put on temporary suspension.
