Wednesday, 3 November 2010

The High Court (HC) has directed the government to prepare a policy against stalking, reports bdnews24.com.
A HC bench comprising justices Mohammad Imman Ali and Obaidul Hasan gave the order Tuesday following a writ petition by Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association.
The bench also directed the Home Ministry and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take immediate steps to contain stalking and arrest all those involved in harassing females in public and work places. It ordered them to protect the victims.
In addition, the court also ordered all deputy commissioners (DCs) and local administrations across the country to remain on high alert over stalking incidents.
Supreme Court lawyer Shahina Nasrin, also a leader of the association, filed the petition with the HC Tuesday in the backdrop of persistent incidents of stalking across the country.
Mizanur Rahman, a 36-year old chemistry lecturer of Lokmanpur College in Natore's Bagatipara Upazila, died in a hospital on October 24 after facing severe injuries for protesting harassment of a female student. Mizanur was run over by a motorcycle on October 12. He had been kept on life support for 12 days.
Only two days after Rahman's death, Chapa Rani Bhowmik (48), was killed in a similar manner in Faridpur by 24-year old Debashish Saha Rony for protesting the sexual harassment of her daughter.
