The government will provide financial and technical support for the entrepreneurs to develop the livestock sector, reports BSS.
Secretary to Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Syed Ataur Rahman disclosed this while addressing a workshop as the chief guest in the city Saturday.
The secretary said formulation of a livestock policy is at the final stage now.
The workshop on 'production of genetically-potential breeding bulls for cattle development in Bangladesh' was held under 'Breed Upgrading through Progeny Test Project' of the Department of Livestock.
Chaired by former director general of Department of Livestock Abdur Razzak Mian, the workshop was addressed, among others, by AK Fazlul Haq of Animal Breeding and Genetic Department of Bangladesh Agriculture University, Director of 'Breed Upgrading Through Progeny Test Project' M Ashraf Ali and farmer representative agriculturist Nasimul Haq.
The fisheries and livestock secretary stressed the need for increasing production of cows, goats and poultry to meet the growing demand of meat, milk and eggs.
Breed Upgrading through Progeny Test Project is being implemented in 22 greater districts since 2002.
More than 8,791 productive cows or calves have been selected across the country under this project and about 4,500 farmers are getting financial benefit. Besides, 1,100 farmers have been trained in modern management of livestock under the project.
