CHATTOGRAM July 12: The foundation stone of the long-awaited new Kalurghat Bridge in the port city is likely to be laid next December.
The Bangladesh Railway (BR) is going to build a two-tier road-cum-rail bridge at Kalurghat point over the Karnaphuli River.
BR General Manager (Eastern Zone) Najmul Islam said, "We hope that after completing all the processes, Hon'ble Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of new Kalurghat Bridge in December this year."
Earlier on June 27, a loan agreement was signed with South Korea's Exim Bank to implement the project during the period from 2024 to 2030.
Engineer Golam Mostafa, director of the project, says the total project cost has been fixed at Tk 115.60 billion.
"A new bridge at Kalurghat will be 70 metres upstream from the existing old bridge. The roads and highways division will construct the roads connecting to the bridge."
Sources said the government will construct the new bridge in order to facilitate the communication with Myanmar through Chattogram-Ghundum railway line.
Korea Exim Bank's loan assistance is Tk 82.00 billion. The remaining Tk 33.60 billion will be given by the Bangladesh government.
