Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Thursday arrested four people, including a top listed female drug trader, for their alleged involvement in the killing of a former banker at North Basabo in the capital's Sabujbagh area Wednesday midnight.
A team of RAB-3 unit, conducted the drive at various parts of Basabo and arrested Rashia Begum alias Mafia Chunni (55), the drug trader and her three accomplices - Rony (20), Babu (25) and Farid Ahmed (30).
A RAB official said they recovered various types of drugs, firearms and ammunition from the possession of the arrested criminals during the raid.
"Names of Mafia Chunni and Rony were included in the first information report (FIR) filed by a family member of the deceased with the police station," said sub-inspector of Sabujbagh police station Ejaj Shafi, who was also made investigation officer (IO) of the murder case.
He informed that they sent the arrestees to a court for police remand. But the court set November 21 for hearing of the remand prayer. "We'll investigate them soon after securing remand," the police officer said.
The deceased was identified as Mahfuzul Haq Khan (73), former Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Bangladesh Shilpa Bank (now BDBL). He was a resident of 35/B North Basabo.
Sabujbagh police said a gang of drunken youths, led by Hero, were making noise near Mahfuzul's house at around 9:30 pm.
"As Mahfuzul asked the spoilt youths to stop such nuisance, they got furious and started beating him severely," said Mahfuzul's son Mustafizul Haq.
The offenders also beat up Mustafizul Haq as he came out to his father's rescue. Both the injured father and son were admitted to BIRDEM Hospital where Mahfuzul succumbed to his injuries at 12:30 am.
Family members of the deceased said Mahfuzul Haq has recently had undergone an open-heart surgery.
