BARISAL, Dec 27 (UNB): Four rebel candidates in Barisal and Barguna withdrew from the field in favour of BNP nominees in a bid to thwart the Awami League rivals.
Dr Sultan of Jamaat in Barguna-2, Zahiruddin Swapan in Barisal-1, Mosharraf Hossain Mongu in Barisal-3 and Abul Hossain in Barisal-4 withdrew from the race and extended total support to the official candidates of BNP. Their decision at the last moment has changed the earlier projections in the four constituencies.
Meanwhile, district Jatiya Party leaders including Giasuddin Ahmed Saturday publicly declared Awami League of the grand alliance as 'betrayer' for campaigning against the candidates fighting with plough symbol in Pirojpur-1, Barisal-2 and -6.
With the election campaign ending at zero hours Saturday night, analysts said Awami League led grand alliance candidates are ahead in the campaign in 10 and 4-party alliance in six constituencies in Barisal division. Stiff fight is likely in rest of the five constituencies.
