FE Report
A mobile court Monday sealed off four unauthorised flammable chemical factories and a bulb manufacturing unit at Bangsal in the city as they are located in the residential area.
The mobile court led by Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) executive magistrate Mohammad Al Amin also slapped fine to the tune of Tk 0.6 million on those factories' authorities for not having approval as well as not having minimum fire safety measures.
"We've also arrested three workers from the factories as they failed to pay the fines," Mr. Amin said, adding they don't have any permission to set up factories in the densely-populated residential area.
"We won't allow chemicals being stored in residential areas. It's flammable and too dangerous," he said. "The same drive will be launched in other parts of the city to remove dangerous chemical warehouses from the residential areas," he added.
The drive was conducted at Ali Naqi Deuri and Abul Hasnat Road at Bangsal.
Fire fighters said Thursday's deadly blaze was made worse by an illegal chemical warehouse which caught fire, creating a huge fireball which engulfed the surrounding buildings.
Around 119 people were killed and hundred others injured in the most devastating fire the nation had witnessed.
