In Jhenidah, Monirul Islam, 35, a vendor, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ allegedly with police in Shailkupa Upazila on Monday. Being tipped off that a gang of miscreants had gathered at Kanapukurai village, a police tam raided the village around 3:00am and ‘the criminals started firing bullets at the law enforcers, triggering a gunfight. After the gunfight was over, police recovered Monirul’s body along with a shutter gun, a bullet and a sword from the scene. Police said Monirul was accused in three cases, including robbery and extortion, a claim refused by his family and neighbours. In Tangail, Nur Islam Ulka, 26, and Shahed Miah, 27, who were accused in a case filed for murdering assistant sub-inspector Nurul Islam of Tangail Model Police Station, were killed in similar incidents of ‘shootout’. Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of the police station, said police raided a house in Takia Kodma village of Mirzapur upazila at around 4:00am on Monday to arrest Ulka and his accomplices. Sensing their presence, Ulka and his accomplices opened fire, prompting the policemen to retaliate.
