Four state-owned commercial banks (SCBs) have started disbursement of Tk 4.13 billion loans to procure raw hide of sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha.
Only those regular parties who have already repaid their earlier dues, have been qualified for fresh loans in line with the existing guidelines, issued by the SCBs earlier, bank officials said.
Under the guidelines, those who failed to repay their previous loans would not be entitled to fresh credit to purchase the raw hide.
The Sonali Bank Limited has already approved Tk 600 million which is almost the same amount of the previous year against three parties for purchasing hide and skin during the Eid.
"We've given the approval to the parties for disbursement of such loans last week," a senior official of the Sonali Bank Limited told the FE without elaborating.
In 2009, the Sonali Bank provided Tk 655 million to the same parties for the same purpose.
The Janata Bank Limited has decided to disburse Tk 2.57billion against 26 parties this year, up by Tk 770 million from the previous year, to facilitate the country's leather sector.
"We've already started disbursing the funds to our clients," a senior official of the Janata Bank said adding that the bank has approved the loans on the basis of repayment status.
"The Janata Bank is providing loans only to the regular parties," he said adding that the bank has already directed its branches concerned for taking necessary measures in this connection.
The Agrani Bank Limited has decided to provide Tk 900 million this year to tanners for purchasing raw hides as against Tk 1.43 billion of the previous year.
"We'll provide the loans to tanners for purchasing of rawhides in the Eid festival," Syed Abdul Hamid, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Agrani Bank told the FE.
