Volatile rice market

FE REPORT | Sunday, 28 August 2022

In a bid to cool off the prevailing volatile price situation, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted a drive at Babu Bazar wholesale rice market in the capital on Saturday.
Assistant Director of DNCRP Dhaka office Abdul Jabbar Mondol led the drive that fined four traders Tk55,000 for violating consumer rights and government directives.
The businesses that were fined are: M/S Rezaul Enterprise (Tk5,000), M/S Alif Rice Agency (Tk20,000) , M/S Madina Rice Agency (Tk 10,000) and M/S Tripti Bandar (Tk20,000).
During the drive, the DNCRP officials said, the traders (those who were fined) did not display price charts anywhere in their respective shops, they failed to show money receipts against the rice purchases and were selling rice at exorbitant prices to the customers.
Abdul Jabbar Mondol told the media that there were big stocks of rice at shops at Babu Bazar wholesale rice market.
"The traders (wholesalers) could not tell us the real reason behind the price surge of rice despite a falling trend in its prices at the mill gates," he said.
