Sunday, 22 May 2011

RANGAMATI, May 21 (Agencies): Four activists of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) including its central committee member Animesh Chakma were shot dead at Mitingacchari village of Shuvalong in Borkol Upazila Saturday. The gunfight occurred between the pro and anti-CHT peace accord at about 9:30 am. Three other victims were identified as Pulak Juti Chakma, Krishna Bhusan Chakma and Sukrasen Chakma. Police recovered the body of Sukrasen Chakma. Police and army began operation in the area to recover the remaining dead bodies. UPDF, an organisation opposing the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord signed in 1997, put the deaths at four and blamed rival pro-accord Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) for the attack. PCJSS, which had signed the CHT accord with the government to end a decade-long bush war, however, denied the allegation. United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) has called a daylong road and water way blockade programme in the district Sunday in protest against Saturday's killing of its members.
