Fragrance of pine forests

Tuesday, 21 July 2015

This interesting and informative news item came as a pleasant surprise to this writer, with some idea of Botany, studied way back in 1948-50 at the then Intermediate level. It seems that pine forests produce a natural fragrance as reported in the National Geographic of July 2015. As reported, volatile organic substances (VOCs, in short) emanate from pine trees and spread to the atmosphere. These VOCs then react with the atmospheric air to release aerosol particles, which is believed to increase with more sunlight. As reported, current studies on the subject indicates that the release of VOCs is more than what was believed earlier, and will probably increase as the warming of the Earth increases.
This is an interesting idea. The scientists should carry out research and related studies on the matter and its presence in the Sundarbans. May be the forest density in many parts of the Sundarbans, blocking the sunlight; could prevent this reaction with sunlight to some extent. But all these facts need to be studied and researched upon. We should set up laboratories and facilities so that scientists can carry out studies on the matter over a period of time and carry out detailed investigations on this interesting possibility of release of natural flavour.
