Fraudster of Tk 1.0b arrested in Chattogram

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 19: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) arrested a fraudster who embezzled more than Tk 1.0 billion from a number of businessmen.
There are about 22 cases against him, of which he has been convicted in 11 cases.
The arrested identified as Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury (42), son of Abu Taher Chowdhury, is a resident of the Katirhat area under Hathazari Upazila in Chattogram.
Mezbah got started his business at an early age after passing HSC and became successful very soon.
Later, he started seeking investment in his business from different businessmen to enlarge his business. But his business turned loss-making and he started cheating people in different ways.
He took millions of taka from several businessmen showing a scrap ship at Kumira area in Sitakund as his own. But he never owned the ship.
Later, he took money from many other people posing himself as a relative of a minister and said that he got diamonds worth Tk 20 billion. He cheated people saying he needs money to sell the diamonds.
But, he never returned the money to the people from whom he took them.
Commanding Officer (CO) of RAB-7 Lieutenant Colonel MA Yousuf narrated his story at a press conference held at the Chandgaon camp of the elite force on Monday afternoon.
He said, "We received several complaints about Mezbah and started looking for him, but we faced challenges in nabbing him. In the last 7 years, he used more than a hundred mobile sims and changed locations frequently. Moreover, he tried to change his face in different ways."
"Acting on secret information, we conducted a raid at a flat in Hamzarbag area under Panchlaish thana in the city on Sunday evening and arrested the culprit," the RAB-7 CO said.
"We found 22 cases of fraud and extortion against him of which he has been awarded different periods of imprisonment and fines. There might be more cases against him and his family members might be involved in his fraud," he added.
MA Yousuf also said, "We will look into his cases and try to identify the people who helped him in cheating people and embezzle millions of Taka from people."
