Free, fair and credible election for democracy

Friday, 24 April 2015

Elections in three city corporations are going to be held on April 28, 2015 in which millions of people will cast their votes to elect their representatives. Although these are non-partisan elections, we have politicised them for which the election commission is facing difficulties to provide a level playing field for all candidates irrespective of party affiliations. Our election commission is not fully independent and its officials are assigned by the government. Obviously they do not feel secure to take actions against candidates from the leading parties and therefore candidates from the ruling party violate the code of conduct indiscriminately.
On the other hand candidates of the opposition parties have to face harassments from different angles. On April 20, 2015 we observed the attack on Khaleda Zia's vehicles at Karwanbazar while she was campaigning for Tabith Awal, a candidate backed by 20-party alliance. Since the government is responsible for safety and security of every citizen of the country and politics is meant to serve the humanity, all parties are expected to uphold the principles of humanity.
All concerned should contribute their mite to hold a free, fair and credible election and the law enforcing agencies must be neutral and their actions shall be in accordance with the directives of the election commission.
They should create an environment where voters will feel free to go to the voting centres to cast their votes and elect the representatives of their choice.
