Freedom fighter Shafaat Jamil dies

Valiant freedom fighter Colonel (retd) Shafaat Jamil Bir Bikram died of cardiac arrest at his Uttara residence in the city early Saturday. He was 71, reports UNB.
Family sources said Jamil breathed his last at about 2:30 am. He was buried at Banani Graveyard after namaj-e-janaza at Dhaka Cantonment Central Mosque. Jamil was decorated with Bir Bikram title, the third highest gallantry award of Bangladesh, for his contribution towards the War of Liberation in 1971.
He had helped Brigadier Khaled Mosharraf in a counter-coup on November 3, 1975 after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Jamil assisted Khaled Mosharraf to initiate an armed uprising on that day and proceeded towards the Bangabhaban against the then regime of Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad. On November 7, his attempts failed and Khaled Mosharraf was assassinated while Jamil was arrested. He had retired from army on Mar 26, 1980.
Son of East Pakistan Civil Service (judicial) Officer AH Karimullah, Jamil was born at Khargamara village of Kuliachar Upazila in Kishoreganj district on March 1, 1940.
He was educated at Dhaka College, University of Dhaka and Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul.
