Freelancers need regulatory support
Friday, 28 August 2020
We hear close to a million Bangladeshi youths are engaged in carrying out outsourced assignments from companies and organisations around the world. But, nobody can say the exact number. It's encouraging to know that the prime minister, at an official meeting, emphasised giving these freelancers social recognition.
We now hope that there would be an official list of the number and what kind of jobs they are doing. Such listing would help many others to get similar jobs. The freelancers face double taxation for their income but do not receive regulatory support at home. Their income should be made tax-free so that they are encouraged to bring money home through official channels.
It's also important to provide freelancers with technological support and higher skills and knowledge. This can help them earn higher amount doing more sophisticated jobs. The coronavirus crisis has offered higher opportunities for outsourcing online but we need to be better equipped to grab them.
