FE REPORT
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Saturday that freezing bank accounts of former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed is an 'eyewash' on the part of the government.
Senior joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the comments at a discussion titled 'Looting, mismanagement and lack of proper management are responsible for accidents, deaths and public sufferings' organised by Association of Engineers Bangladesh ( AEB), Dhaka at the National Press Club in the capital.
"Would Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina forget the role of former IGP Benazir Ahmed and other high-ups like him for their backing to this government to hold on to power sans people and voters?" he asked.
"Didn't the government's intelligence agencies know the matters of Benazir? They certainly knew it," he said.
He said that Benazir's bank accounts are being freezed now due to international pressure and much talks about him (Benazir).
"I ( Rizvi himself) tell you it would yield nothing. Government just makes an eyewash," he continued.
He said that the government will give protection to them (Benazir and like-minded others).
Mr Rizvi alleged that the government committed human rights violation through Benazir.
He said, "Former army chief Aziz Ahmed was the main architecture of the 2018 midnight election."
Mr Rizvi also said that they never heard in the past to hear comments on the matter of politics that was made by Gen (retd) Aziz Ahmed.
He said that Mr Aziz had said that the countrymen never saw a free and fair election (election 2018) after the country's independence.
"In a nutshell this man (Gen (retd) Aziz Ahmed) has given all protection to this government to hold on to power," he maintained.
Mr Rizvi said that as the government has no accountability it would not take action against any wrongdoings committed by the former government officials.
Senior vice-president of AEB Md Motahar Hossain pressed over the event also attended by assistant science and technology affairs secretary of BNP Engineer Riazul Islam Rizu and secretary general of AEB Hasin Ahmed.
Meanwhile, BNP paid glowing tributes on Saturday to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam marking his 125th birth anniversary.
Senior joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi along with party leaders and activists placed a wreath on the graveyard of the national poet on Dhaka University campus in the city.
He said, "Poet Nazrul had taught us the art of protest and with that we have been fighting to restore democracy in the country and freedom of media etc."
"We (BNP) are fighting for democracy and for this reason we are being sent to jail and awarded punishment," he maintained.
He said that poet Nazrul first uttered the words of freedom and liberty and for these reasons he was sent to jail but did not bow down.
