Freight ship from Pakistan brings goods, raw materials

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 16: The cargo vessel from Pakistan's Karachi, which arrived at Chattogram port on Monday, carried a total of 370 containers, comprising of onions, potato, industrial raw materials, automobile parts and other goods.
Different local media reported that the goods transport marks the first-ever direct maritime link between the Bangladesh and Pakistan, but Mohammed Omar Faruk, secretary at the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), said, "The import of goods from Pakistan via Dubai port is not new. Many ships from Dubai port carried Pakistani goods for Bangladesh since long time."
"However, the ship unloaded the containers and left the port on Tuesday. The importers are now starting the customs procedures to clear these goods,"
The container ship, Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan, currently sailing under the flag of Panama, unloaded cargo weighing a total of 6,337 tonnes, supplied by 18 export companies from Pakistan via United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Dubai.
Among the containers, 297 were brought from Pakistan's Karachi port while 73 single containers were brought from the UAE, according to the CPA sources.
The ship carried a total of 115 containers containing sodium carbonate, commonly known as soda ash in its anhydrous form, 46 containers containing dolomite, 35 containers containing limestone and six containers of magnesium carbonate.
Broken glass, a raw material for the glass industry, was in 10 containers. Moreover, materials for the export-oriented garment industry, including fabrics, dyes were in 28 containers while one container was loaded with vehicle parts.
As much as 42 containers carried onion, 14 refrigerated containers were stacked with potatoes, both of the staple have been imported by Hafiz Corporation and M.R. Trading of Dhaka and Allahr Rahmat Store of Chattogram.
