Fresh charge sheet against Azam

Friday, 6 January 2012

The International Crimes Tribunal has set January 9 for order on a prosecution plea to take into congnisance the charge made against former Jama'at-e-Islami ameer Ghulam Azam for committing crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971, reports UNB.
Justice M Nizamul Huq, chairman of the three-member tribunal, on Thursday passed the order after the prosecution submitted afresh the formal charge against the prime organizer of Jama'at-e-Islami in compliance with its preceding order.
The tribunal also fixed January 9 for hearing a discharge petition submitted by Ghulam Azam, who retired from active politics in 2000.
Eleven days ago, the tribunal had declined to take into cognisance the formal charge as the prosecution failed to prepare it properly and asked the prosecution to submit the formal charge afresh by today (Thursday).
On December 12 last year, chief prosecutor Golam Arif Tipu submitted a petition before the tribunal urging it to take into cognisance the alleged crimes against humanity perpetrated by Ghulam Azam during the 1971 liberation war and also prayed for issuing warrant of arrest against him to face trial.
