Fresh two-day BNP blockade begins today

FE REPORT | Sunday, 12 November 2023

Another spell of countrywide two-day blockade called by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will begin at 6:00 am today (Sunday) to realise their demands including immediate resignation of the government for holding national elections under a non-partisan caretaker government.
Earlier Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi last week virtually announced the two-day blockade programme that will continue until 6:00 am on Tuesday.
Mr Rizvi urged other likeminded political platforms and the country's people to play their due role in intensifying the movement to unseat the Awami League government.
Earlier the BNP and its allies had also enforced countrywide blockade in two phases -one on November 5 and 6 and another on November 8 and 9.
During the blockades, miscreants unleashed violence damaging and torching several buses that also left one bus helper dead. The blockades in two phases earlier widely disrupted inter district bus services. However, different city bus services had run during the blockades that were enforced earlier (on Nov 5 and 6 and Nov 8 and 9).
The blockades had also obstructed plying of goods-laden trucks that increased the prices of essential commodities, according to the traders and sector insiders.
Meanwhile, the law enforcing agencies including police remain alert to thwart any untoward incidents including violence and arson attacks on vehicles during the blockade.
Policemen and other law enforcing agency members were seen patrolling on the city streets on Saturday evening to ensure safety and security of the people.
It is to be mentioned that a total of 64 buses were either set ablaze or vandalised since October 28 until Friday (November 10, 2023) in the capital due to the opposition sponsored blockade and hartal, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The country is now passing through a critical juncture due to the prevailing political turmoil.
If the tumultuous political situation does not end soon, it will bring out a bad consequence for the country's economy, according to the sector insiders.
