From gold to mud

Going through the 'Remembrance' page published in a local English daily on 14th December, one wonders which way we are heading to!
Pragmatically speaking, our journey from December 1971 to December 2014 is not an event to rejoice. Our dreams were shattered and hopes dashed. Reality of religious bigotry and in-house exploitation are the 'name of the game' today.
We dreamt of having a nation free from religious bigotry and social exploitation. In reality, we are fast moving towards a dungeon of darkness and evils. Exploitation and corruption seem to be the order of the day.
Was this the reason why Bangladesh was created? These days, we only see corruption and illegal activities around us and wonder why the 'elected' representatives of the people can not go all out to uproot these vices from the society.
Political leaders apart, we also have a role to play. Unfortunately, the common people appear to be indifferent of what is happening around them. They seem to be oblivious of the fact that if we unite ourselves and stand against these evils, we can easily drive them away.
We are about to step in a new year. There will be a lot of celebrations across the country. I think, the best way to welcome the New Year will be to take a solemn oath to wage a war against the corruption and make the society clean.
