From parliament to people
Saturday, 25 April 2026
The recent government initiative to establish office rooms for Members of Parliament (MPs) within their constituencies marks a timely and commendable step towards deepening grassroots democracy. By creating designated visiting spaces, lawmakers can engage more directly and regularly with the people they represent, ensuring that public concerns are heard and addressed more efficiently.
The idea, earlier highlighted in a Letter to the Editor published on 4 August 2025, in this daily emphasised the necessity of such offices at district council premises, supported by minimal secretarial staff from the respective MP's party. It is encouraging to see that the Ministry of Local Government and Cooperatives has already issued directives in this regard, demonstrating responsiveness to constructive public discourse.
This initiative is likely to bridge the gap between elected representatives and citizens, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where access to policymakers is often limited. A structured and accessible office environment can enhance accountability, improve service delivery, and foster trust in democratic institutions. Moreover, policymakers would be able to gauge the sentiments of their constituents and assess whether governance is progressing in the right direction. Grassroots-level information gathered through these offices can help MPs better understand real challenges -- whether related to agriculture, infrastructure, education, or healthcare.
However, the impact of the office depends on implementation. Simply allocating office space is not enough. For meaningful outcomes, offices must be properly staffed, accessible and free from partisan misuse. There should also be clear guidelines to ensure they serve all constituents equally, not just political supporters. Considering the country's dense population and diverse local challenges, institutionalising MP offices could deepen participatory governance. It can shift politics from being election-centric to service-oriented, ultimately contributing to more inclusive and responsive administration.
