Fund crisis hampers Parbatipur Locomotive Workshop operation

NILPHAMARI, Aug 2: Diesel Locomotive Workshop at Parbatipur repaired a total of 22 diesel locomotives last year but due to fund constraint the overhauling work remained unsatisfactory.

According to sources, the overhauling of a locomotive needs Tk 8.0 million (Tk 80 lakh) while the price of a new locomotive is Tk 200 million.

Sources further said the Bangladesh Railway (BR) needed to overhaul around 43 locomotives every year.

In 2007-08 the BR set a target to overhaul 24 locomotives and sanctioned Tk 100 million for this purpose.

Parbatipur Locomotive Workshop was established in 1992 on 111 acres of land. Of the total 286 locomotives of the Bangladesh Railway, 227 have already crossed their lifespan.

Sources further said if proper initiative was taken the workshop would be able to assemble new locomotives.
