Funding local government

Wednesday, 29 August 2007

Regrettably, the issue of having a strong and self reliant local government to promote uniform development throughout the country, continues to be rather callously addressed . There are interest groups who have a stake in keeping the uncertainties alive about local governance bure. The present mode of governance provides formidable powers to such interest groups to control the flow and use of resources at local levels. They would loathe to see such powers taken away. But the present government is expected to see through their designs and foil the same.
The government channels funds to the local bodies which are really too insignificant compared to need. There is a powerful case for increasing governmental allocations for the local bodies. But the same should be only done after such bodies have been set up on proper and effective basis to get value out of the increased resource flow to them.
