Furniture makers to help build career in business

The country's furniture makers said Monday that they would set up a training institute on 10 bigha land near the capital for those who are interested to build their career in furniture business.
Bangladesh Furniture Industries Owners Association (BFIOA) president KM Akhtaruzzaman said "Akhtar furnishers and Partex furniture have plans to set up a private training institute for furniture designing and manufacturing in early 2010"
He disclosed the plan while addressing the inaugural ceremony of 7th National Furniture Fair 2009 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre organised by BFIOA (Bangladesh Furniture Industries Owners Association).
BFIOA president said "The world furniture market is substantially large and we will be able to compete in the international market if the government declared the industry as a thrust sector and formulate specific furniture related policy in the industrial policy."
He emphasised the need for technical knowledge and the use of technology to foster the industry which may create employment opportunity at least 2.5 million people.
"Now two million people and 25,000 companies are involved in the furniture industry."
He said the main objective of the fair was to promote locally produced furniture, create awareness about the quality and international standard of these furniture amongst both local and the overseas customers.
Selim H Rahman, secretary general BFIOA urged the government to impose extra duty to discourage finished furniture import for a specific period and to rethink about the duty policy on imported raw material to help the local furniture producers.
Vice chairman of Export Promotion bureau (EPB) Shahab Ullah said 'Bangladesh exported furnitures worth Tk 205 million in 2008-09 and Tk 165 million worth in 2007-08."
Freedom fighter Bir Protik Taramon Bibi inaugurated the fair while freedom fighter Ferdousi Priyabhashini and vice chairman of Export Promotion bureau (EPB) attended the inaugural ceremony as special guests.
BFIOA president KM Akhtaruzzaman presided over the inaugural ceremony of the six day long fair.
