Galloping horse of house rent

Saturday, 1 March 2014

House rent has been increasing abnormally day by day and it is hitting hard the middle income families. The house owners have been increasing house rent every year as they know shifting house is a big hassle. Although there is law to control abnormal house rent, it is ineffective. So, the lives of tenants have become miserable.
I live in a rented house in Dhaka and in the last two and a half years my flat owner has increased house rent twice. When I protested, he simply said that if I am unable to pay the increased amount, I may leave. The successive governments, so far, have not addressed the issue of house rent leaving the tenants of Dhaka city at the mercy of house owners.
According to the House Rent Control Act 1991, house rent can only be increased after every two years but no one is aware of it. It seems there is no one for the tenants suffering tyranny of the house owners silently. The government should take effective measures to reduce the sufferings of the tenants.
