Gang of motorcycle thieves arrested, 225 bikes recovered
FE Report | Wednesday, 9 July 2014
Police in a special drive arrested an organised gang of inter-district motorcycle lifters and recovered a total of 225 stolen motorbikes from their possession from five districts, including the capital on Tuesday.
Some 15 people were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the stealing of bikes and it is believed that members of the gang used to steal the motorised two-wheelers from the capital and its adjacent districts.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Mirpur Zone) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Imtiaz Ahmed confirmed the recovery, saying that the stolen bikes were recovered from Dhaka, Manikganj, Jessore, Faridpur and Satkhira districts over the last three days.
He said the gang has a strong network in the capital and its surrounding districts. Its members normally lift the two wheelers and arrange fake documents of those before putting on sale.
"We'll send the arrestees to the court with a remand prayer as they need to be further interrogated in this connection," he said, adding that this is the highest ever haul of stolen motorbikes made by any of the law enforcement agencies.
Sub-Inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station Mohammed Rasel, who was in the drive, said they launched a special drive in response to growing complain of bike lifting in the area and managed to arrest Sadek alias Akbar, a ringleader of a bike lifting gang, with a bike, which was stolen from in front of Mirpur branch of United Commercial Bank (UCB) on Sunday last.
"Based on his (Akbar) confessional statement, we arrested his close associate Ashiqur Rahman. Then we quizzed them separately and managed to receive sensational information regarding bike lifting," he added.
He said the gang has been committing such crimes after being divided into four groups -- one group is engaged in lifting bikes, some of them triy to communicate with the original owners of the bike to buy the documents, some is in the jobs to change engine and chassis number and remaining members sell the stolen items with the help of unscrupulous showroom managers of various brands.
