Garment Village dev work in full gear

FE REPORT | Saturday, 22 July 2023

The BGMEA Garment Village is set to enter its final stage of development as the construction of the required road and drainage linking the industrial zone was inaugurated on Friday.
A two-lane 23-kilometre road as well as 29-kilometre drainage will connect the village with other infrastructure at the visionary Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN).
In consequence of this, investors in the garment village can now begin construction of their factories and prepare for the next course of action.
Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) executive chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun inaugurated the construction of the road and drainage system as the chief guest, reads a statement.
BEZA executive member Mohammed Erfan Sharif, BSMSN project director Abdullah Al Mahmud Faruk, officials and representatives of local administrations, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and investors were present.
The BGMEA Garment Village is located within the 2A and 2B precincts of the BSMSN at Mirsarai.
Speaking at the programme, Mr Harun said the development of the road and drainage has begun at a cost of Tk 4.5 billion.
"It means the investors in the garment village can now get their land and prepare for work on the construction of their respective industries," he added.
Highlighting BEZA's all-out efforts to facilitate investment, Mr Harun said his office has been providing necessary support and utility services like water, gas and electricity despite having so many challenges.
He said the BEZA has been working with various development partners to ensure international standards in economic zones (EZs) by establishing effluent treatment plants centrally.
According to the statement, the BSMSN is being developed on a contiguous 33,000 acres of land in Mirsarai and Sitakunda upazilas of Chattogram and Sonagazi of Feni.
The industrial city has so far attracted proposed investment of $19 billion as four companies have already begun manufacturing there.
