Gas crisis lingers on

Monday, 28 December 2009

The gas crisis in the city has reached unbearable levels. In fact, the phenomenon is not new and had been like this for a long time. No matter how many times it has been mentioned in the media, the authorities seem to have no answer for the crisis except to say, "We know, please wait, we are going to do something for sure, it is just a matter of time before everything will be fine again," or words to that effect. Or they tell you the real "reasons" behind it, which include the common: more demand than supply, demand goes up during winter.
Instead of half an hour, the time needed to boil rice exceeds four hours at times, they say! Currently, in many places in the capital, out of 24 hours, gas is missing for 18-20 hours. Lunch is prepared with breakfast and dinner is ready to b served around midnight.
In the capital the gas crisis is a regular phenomenon in Mirpur, Shonir Akhrha, Rayerbagh, Mohammadbagh, Kadamtali, Banasree, East Rampura, Kunjaban, Khilgaon, Mohammadpur, Hazaribagh, Jhigatola, Rayerbazar, Jurain, Moghbazar, Modhubagh and Noyatola.
Finally, the sufferers are not only citizens trying to cook but innumerable industrial units as well. Our gas comes from 79 wells in 19 areas (blocks?) and the total daily production is 1.98 billion (198 crore) cubic feet while our daily demand is 2.25 billion (225 crore) cubic feet. In other words we are still short of 270 million (27 crore) cubic feet. On the other hand, we have well meaning but supremely mistaken people who want to sell our gas. Imagine.
